A Toronto tradition continues in 2009 this February 21st from 9pm to 11pm at Dufferin Grove Park.

Hosted by The Bike Joint this mad extravaganza of spiked tires flinging stinging ice chips began years ago when (no, no climate change isn’t real!) the lake stopped freezing over well enough to hold the “St Valentine’s Day Massacre” ice race in the harbour of Toronto Island. Since then (1999 was the last race out there) the race has been held at Dufferin Grove on the hockey rinks. Typically the event consists of elimination heats utilizing one rink, with the grand finale showcasing the best ice racers on an extended course that uses both of the large rinks at Dufferin Grove Park. After the grand finale anyone who is daring enough to do so can join in the famous “Rubber Race” which, as you may have guessed, doesn’t require any special ice tires and like the whole event is great fun for racers and spectators alike.
Hot Chocolate, coffee, cookies and other warm, good things are available in the rink clubhouse from the Zamboni Cafe. There is also a large indoor space in the clubhouse with chairs and most importantly, a lovely wood stove to warm up with if you get too chilly watching or racing, or both!
The last few years have seen racers competing in temperatures of -20 C before the wind chill and still there was a great turnout, lots of camaraderie and fun with cyclists and others of every age group. This year’s turnout will be stupendous no matter how cold it is. For many this tradition signals the beginning of the end of winter, that turning point from which we can finally imagine that Spring must be closer!
